IntroductionThere’s something truly magical about blending cultures through fashion. Recently, I had the opportunity to showcase the beauty of African attire against the breathtaking landscapes of the UAE. My photoshoot took place in two stunning locations, each offering a unique backdrop that enhanced the richness of my traditional outfit. The first stop: the serene desert of Umm Al Quwain.
Golden Hour in Umm Al Quwain’s Desert From Sharjah , we drove for approximately 40 minutes before arriving at our destination in Umm Al Quwain. The vast, untouched desert stretched endlessly before us, its golden sands glowing under the soft hues of the setting sun. By 5:30 PM, the light was just perfect—casting a warm, golden glow that complemented the deep, vibrant yellow colors of my African dress.
As I stepped onto the sand, the fabric of my outfit flowed beautifully in the breeze, a striking contrast to the earthy tones of the desert. The wind carried a sense of freedom, making each pose feel effortless and graceful. The wide, open space created an almost dreamlike atmosphere, where tradition met nature in a seamless fusion of culture and landscape.
As usual, I wanted to showcase the normal routine costume of most African people my age. The attire I chose was not just about style; it was a representation of the everyday elegance and cultural pride that many African women carry with them, no matter where they are in the world.
Cultural Essence in Masafi Mountains and Al Souq Al Juma
Our next destination was the Masafi Mountains, a place known for its rugged beauty, natural springs, and historic markets. Driving through the winding roads, we arrived at a vast desert landscape, where I portrayed a traditional villager carrying a woven flat basket filled with fresh fruits and vegetables on my head—a common scene reflecting the daily routines of many African women.
The golden-brown hues of the mountains provided a striking backdrop, and the quiet, rustic surroundings added authenticity to the theme. The traditional attire, paired with the desert scenery, felt like a harmonious blend of African heritage meeting the rich landscapes of the UAE.
From there, we moved to Al Souq Al Juma, or the Friday Market, a famous spot in Masafi known for its fresh produce, handmade pottery, and local crafts. The vibrant atmosphere was lively with vendors selling an array of fruits and vegetables, reminiscent of markets back home. As I walked through the souq, I couldn’t resist exploring the pottery stalls, admiring the beautifully crafted clay pots and decorative pieces.
To complete the experience, we bought a traditional Emirati dish called Harees—a delicious, slow-cooked meal made of wheat and meat. Since it was Ramadan, we had to take it as a takeaway, waiting until iftar to enjoy its rich, comforting flavors. This small yet meaningful experience connected the essence of African and Emirati traditions, reminding me of the warmth and hospitality shared across different cultures.
Final Thoughts
This photo shoot was more than just a creative project—it was a celebration of culture, identity, and the beauty of embracing traditions in new environments. The UAE, with its rich diversity and stunning landscapes, provided the perfect canvas for showcasing African elegance. From the vast deserts of Umm Al Quwain to the cultural richness of Masafi and its bustling market, every moment felt like a tribute to both my roots and the land I now call home.
I can’t wait to share more of this journey as I continue exploring different cultural styles in unique settings. Stay tuned for more, and let me know in the comments—where should I take my next cultural fashion shoot?
